In the heart of Donostia - San Sebastián stands the majestic Buen Pastor Cathedral (Catedral del Buen Pastor), a Neo-Gothic masterpiece and one of the city's most iconic landmarks. Completed in 1897, the cathedral was designed by Basque architect Manuel de Echave and is notable for its towering spire, which rises over 75 meters, making it the tallest building in the city. Built from sandstone sourced from nearby Mount Igeldo, intricate stained-glass windows and a serene, spacious interior complement its striking exterior.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Buen Pastor Cathedral is its precise alignment with another of San Sebastián’s major religious landmarks: the Basilica of Santa María del Coro, located in the Old Town. Despite being in different districts - the Cathedral in the modern “Centro” and the Basilica in the “Parte Vieja”—these two churches are positioned almost exactly in a straight line along Calle Mayor, forming a symbolic and visual axis that connects the spiritual and historical heart of the city.
Standing at the doors of either church, you can see the other directly in the distance, a rare and intentional urban feature that highlights the city's thoughtful design and balance between old and new. This alignment not only provides a striking visual connection but also underscores the city’s evolution from its medieval origins to its 19th-century expansion. It’s a subtle yet powerful reminder of San Sebastián’s layered history, where tradition and modernity coexist harmoniously.
Surrounding the cathedral is San Sebastián’s city center, often referred to as the “Centro” or “Area Romántica” due to its elegant Belle Époque architecture and 19th-century urban layout. This district developed in the late 1800s when the city expanded beyond its original old town, and it reflects the influence of Parisian urban planning, with wide avenues, ornate facades, and symmetrical plazas. Streets like Avenida de la Libertad are lined with designer boutiques, charming cafés, and upscale shops, making it a popular destination for both locals and visitors.
The city center also offers easy access to many of Donostia’s highlights - within walking distance, you’ll find the Tabakalera (cultural center), Mercado de San Martín, the Alderdi Eder gardens, and the picturesque María Cristina Bridge.
